Leeds has transformed itself from a post-industrial city into one of the North's most vibrant cultural destinations. The Victorian arcades are stunning — the Grand Arcade, Thornton's Arcade, and the ornate County Arcade make even a bit of window shopping feel like an occasion. But the city's energy comes from its people: students, creatives, and a nightlife crowd that keeps the bars and clubs of Call Lane and the Merrion Centre buzzing well past midnight.

The music scene punches hard. Leeds has produced Kaiser Chiefs, Alt-J, and Yard Act, and the city's venues — from the grand Leeds Arena to the intimate Brudenell Social Club — attract touring acts and local talent in equal measure. The Leeds International Film Festival and the West Yorkshire Playhouse add depth to a cultural calendar that rarely lets up.

The food scene has come into its own. Kirkgate Market — one of the largest covered markets in Europe and the birthplace of Marks and Spencer — is a brilliant place to eat cheaply and well. Around it, the restaurant scene has exploded: from the independents on North Street to the Dock Street traders and the fine dining on Park Row.

Leeds is set in beautiful countryside, with the Yorkshire Dales within easy reach for a day trip. But the city itself has plenty of green space — Roundhay Park is one of the largest city parks in Europe, and the canal towpath makes for a peaceful walk right through the centre of town.
