Birmingham is a city in the middle of a remarkable reinvention. Once known primarily for its industrial heritage, it has blossomed into one of the UK's most exciting cultural destinations. The Jewellery Quarter is a gorgeous maze of independent studios, cocktail bars, and restaurants housed in converted workshops. Digbeth — the city's creative quarter — pulses with street art, live music venues, and some of the country's best club nights.

The food scene here is genuinely world-class. Birmingham has more Michelin stars than any UK city outside London, but you'll eat just as memorably at a Balti house on the Ladypool Road or a Cantonese barbecue in Chinatown. The city's diversity is its superpower — over 180 nationalities call Birmingham home, and that richness shows up on every menu and every stage.

The cultural infrastructure is impressive: Symphony Hall hosts everything from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to touring rock acts, the Hippodrome is home to Birmingham Royal Ballet, and the REP theatre has been producing groundbreaking work since 1913. The Library of Birmingham, with its stunning rooftop terrace, is worth a visit just for the architecture.

Birmingham sits right at the centre of the UK's rail network, making it easy to reach from almost anywhere. The canal network — longer than Venice's — threads through the city centre and makes for lovely walking routes between pubs, galleries, and green spaces.
