Glasgow does not do things by halves, and Wednesday 28 October proves it spectacularly. From lunchtime theatre and pie to a city-rattling double-header of Britpop legends, Halloween mischief, and late-night electronic pulse, the city is throwing everything at the wall — and it all sticks. Wrap up, get out, and let Glasgow do what it does best.

Highlights

A Play, A Pie and A Pint: Badhbh-Shith and The Storytellers — The beloved Oran Mor lunchtime ritual returns with what promises to be a bewitching slice of Scottish mythological storytelling — perfectly timed for the Halloween season. For the price of a ticket you get a short, punchy new play plus a pie and a pint, making this the most civilised and nourishing hour you could spend on a Wednesday afternoon. Doors at 1:00pm; check the website for pricing and to grab your spot before they go.

Manic Street Preachers & Suede — Two of the most eloquent, emotionally charged bands to ever emerge from 1990s Britain share a stage at the OVO Hydro, and if that sentence does not make your heart lurch with anticipation then we simply cannot help you. Suede's swooning romanticism followed by the Manics' furious, literate anthems — or vice versa — is the kind of double-bill that people will be talking about for years. Doors at 6:30pm; check the website for tickets before this one sells out entirely.

Rocky Horror Drag-A-Long — Oran Mor goes gloriously unhinged for Halloween with a drag-fuelled sing-along version of the cult classic, and the instruction to dress up is less a suggestion and more a moral obligation. Expect sequins, fishnet, audience participation, and the kind of joyful collective abandon that only Rocky Horror can conjure. Kicking off at 7:00pm, this is the night out for anyone who has ever wanted to shout back at a screen while wearing a feather boa — which, let's be honest, is all of us.

Cancer Bats — The Canadian hardcore punk outfit descend on the legendary King Tuts Wah Wah Hut at 7:30pm and they are not coming quietly. Ferociously energetic live performers with a devoted following, Cancer Bats in a room the size of King Tuts is the kind of show that leaves your ears ringing and your faith in live music completely restored. Check the website for tickets and prepare to lose yourself entirely.

Celtic FC V Dundee United — Celtic Park under the floodlights on a Wednesday night is one of Scottish football's great atmospheric experiences — the roar of the crowd, the green-and-white sea, and the electric crackle of a home game in full voice. Kick-off is at 7:45pm and with a derby-flavoured edge to proceedings, this is exactly the kind of match that reminds you why football matters. Check the website for availability and pricing.

Henry Durodola — For those whose Wednesday night is only just getting started at quarter to midnight, The Blue Dog hosts Henry Durodola from 11:45pm — a late-night live music experience that costs £17 and promises something properly special at an hour when the city's inhibitions have mostly dissolved. The Blue Dog has earned a reputation for intimate, high-quality bookings, and this looks set to continue that fine tradition into the small hours.
