Glasgow does not do Sundays quietly. This week the city stretches from midday family raving at a craft brewery all the way through to free live music, a historic comedy recording, and a luminous orchestral journey through the worlds of Studio Ghibli — proof, if you needed it, that the weekend saves its best trick for last. Wherever you find yourself today, there is a room in this city with your name on the door.

Highlights

Forever Young - Family Rave Day 2 — Drygate Brewery throws open its doors for a rave that the whole family can actually attend together, and we mean that in the best possible way. From 1:00pm, expect big sounds, dancing, and that unmistakable collective joy that only a proper rave can conjure — just with a few more under-fives on the dancefloor. Tickets run from free to £13, making this one of the most generous afternoons Glasgow has to offer this weekend.

Hayao Miyazaki's Dreams by Mystery Ensemble — Saint Luke's — already one of the most beautiful venues in the country — becomes something close to a portal at 6:00pm, as Mystery Ensemble bring the music of Studio Ghibli to life in what promises to be a genuinely transporting evening. Whether you grew up with Totoro and Spirited Away or you are discovering these worlds for the first time, hearing that music performed live in a candlelit converted church will do something to you. Tickets are £27 and absolutely worth it.

Shane Todd - Hold Me Back - Special Recording — There is something thrillingly intimate about being in the room when a comedian commits a show to tape, and Scottish comic Shane Todd is doing exactly that at Blackfriars Basement tonight — twice, in fact, with shows at 4:30pm and 7:30pm. The audience becomes part of the record, which gives the whole evening a charged, electric atmosphere that a standard gig night simply cannot replicate. At £15 a ticket, you might end up on the album.

Anne Gair and Daria Kulesh — The Glad Cafe is one of those rooms that makes you feel like you have found a secret, and tonight it hosts a double bill of two genuinely compelling singer-songwriters in Anne Gair and Daria Kulesh. From 7:30pm, expect nuanced, beautifully crafted folk and acoustic music in an atmosphere that is warm, attentive, and entirely unhurried. Tickets are £12 — a small price for the kind of Sunday evening you will still be thinking about on Tuesday.

Colm O'Sullivan — If your Sunday needs a soundtrack but your wallet needs a rest, head to The Blue Dog at 5:00pm for a free set from Colm O'Sullivan. This is exactly the kind of low-key, high-quality live music that makes Glasgow's pub scene one of the best in Britain — no fuss, no ticket queue, just a drink and something genuinely good to listen to.

Bungalaff! Stand Up Comedy Night — Just a short hop to Paisley, The Bungalow Bar hosts Bungalaff!, a grassroots stand-up comedy night that is the kind of unpretentious, raucous fun that Sunday evenings were invented for. At just £5 from 7:00pm, the risk is almost offensively low, and the reward — if the room gets going, as these nights tend to — is an absolute blast.
